Torsdag 28 oktober 2009 - Planta

Well days are shortening fast: it's pitch dark at 16:30... Perfect conditions for "autumn depression". Still, Dee-Dee is growing fast, careless of the trees losing their leaves, and the weather gradually worsening...

Yes, homework... this is the main reason for me not updating this blog so much lately.
I've got quite a bit of literature to digest within the two next weeks! As you can see, I am planning to conquer the world very soon, as soon as I finish reading Women in Charge - Policing, gender and leadership and The Warrior Queens!!

Onsdag 14 oktober 2009 - Sofia Jannok

Kultur på Campus...
Here in Umeå, the University organises quite a few cultural events if you know where to look for the information. So today during lunch break there was a concert in the hall, in the teaching building. There is a grand piano there, and students go and play quite often I was told.

Anyway, this was the first time I got to see Sofia Jannok sing live.
Sofia is a young singer from Gällivare, born 15 September 1982. Most of her songs are in Sámi, and her singing is based on the traditional yoiking while flirting with other musical styles, especially jazz.
A powerful, moving voice...

Here is a video clip from a previous album. This is definitely pop music, but still illustrates what joik is... and the pictures are beautiful. I think some of it is filmed in the ice hotel in Kiruna...

This is Sofia with her pianist, closer to what I listened to today: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x84v72_sofia-jannok-ayyogattis_music
Enjoy :-)

Söndag 4 Oktober 2009 - Innebandy

Today was my sporting day experience, for it was my first Floorball match (as a spectator, of course).
Innebandy, otherwise known as Floorball, is very popular in Sweden, as well as Finland, Norway, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. A lot of young children start playing as soon as they know how to work and run and can often be seen playing in the street with the easily recognisable stick.
Bandy (played on ice by teams of 11) shares common ancestry with ice hockey. Innebandy first developed as the pre-seasonal training practice to bandy tournaments; and was also a popular playground game.
The Internation Floorball Federation was founded in 1986. http://www.floorball.org/default.asp

Today was Umeå (IKSU's team) vs Täby, a city just North from Stockholm.

For my French friends, if you happen to be reading this, and want to know more about Floorball, here is a website you can check out: http://innebandy.ifrance.com/innebandy/mainpage.htm (et bien sûr l'incontournable article Wiki : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unihockey - eh oui, car l'innebandy/floorball s'appelle aussi unihockey en allemand et salibandy en finnois)

English readers, here is the Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floorball

There are different sorts of floorball games. The match I saw was the classic floorball played by 2 teams of 5 players (6 players including the goalkeeper).

Basic rules:
- 3 x 20 min with 10 min intermission where teams change ends,
- There are 2 referees.

Today's match was part of the Eurofloorball cup 2009.

Innebandy is very much like icehockey, except that a lot of contacts are disallowed.

Mål means goal, but I'm sure you've already guessed that!

Umeå won 5-0!

And here is Umeå's team website: http://www.iksuinnebandy.se/

Well, I didn't find anything down town so I had to slay half a dozen elks to make myself this swish furry coat, 100% non-natural fur and leather. So warm and cuddly! :-)

I made the beautiful chapka out the remaining acrylic tails!

Clothing is not that amazingly expensive, if you look at the quality you get.
Shoes are the most valuable piece of clothing and prices are much higher. Even for the traditional pair of clogs you'd have to spend over 600 SEK most of the time. Same for slippers: most are over 400. Still, you get the quality, which is probably worth investing in when thermometer reaches -30° C!

New month, new language... :-)

After an early start to the day with a seminar during which I presented my article about Aritostlean "phronetic" approach (as opposed to "episteme" and "techne", and which I believe could help organisations rethink their business model in the quest for sustainability), I went for a walk down town.

What this is, I don't know... (???)

People in Umeå are preparing the winter... a loat of people rusing around in the shops, and a lot of boots, wooly scarves and mittends, and skin coats on sale. Tis a bit worrying though seeing all this gear: am I going to survive the winter??

Winter bus, with curtains, and the most powerful onboard heating you could imagine!
